Industrial and History Tours from Hernani into the Valley

Hernani and the Basque Country: A Journey Through History, Industry, and Culture

Let’s explore the fascinating story of Hernani and the Basque Country—a tale deeply intertwined with industry, economy, and enduring traditions.

From Portu to Erenotzu: A Walk Through Time

The route from Portu, Hernani’s historic harbor, to the pastoral village of Erenotzu is not just a scenic stroll but also a living history lesson. Along the way, we encounter traces of the Basque economy—from early ironworks and textile industries to modern technology hubs.

1542: The Sagardotegis and the Golden Age of Cider

In 1542, Hernani rose to prominence as a center of sagardotegis (cider houses). This tradition still shapes local culture and economy today. Basque cider (sagardo) is more than just a drink—it’s a symbol of community. Step into historic cellars where barrels still age the region’s iconic brew.

Celts, Romans, and Prehistoric Roots

But the story goes even further back: Before the Romans arrived, the Vascones, the ancient people of the Basque Country, thrived here. What did the Celts leave behind? Not much—the Basque region fiercely preserved its own language and customs, resisting both Celtic and Roman influence.

Bike Ride to Goizueta: Where Basque Identity Endures

Alternatively, we can cycle to Goizueta, a village brimming with Basque pride. Here, tradition meets modernity—from sheep farming to sustainable forestry.

Whether on foot or by bike, each route reveals a piece of the Basque soul. Are you coming along?
